A Brief Calendar of Sorbian Cultural Events

25 January - Birds' Wedding. The most popular of Sorbian children's customs.

January/February - Performances of the Sorbian National Ensemble to mark the Birds' Wedding.

February/March - Zapust (Shrovetide). Driving out winter; this is celebrated in the Cottbus, Forst, Hoyerswerda, and Guben regions.

Lent - God-parents give presents on Maundy Thursday. Decorating of Easter Eggs.

Easter - Easter Singing and Rolling Easter Eggs, predominantly in the Schleife region. Easter Riding on Easter Sunday processions in the Catholic parishes.

30 April - Witch-burning in Göa with cultural performances. Erecting the may-tree, a traditional spring custom.

May - Felling the may-tree. Whit Monday: the greatest Catholic pilgrimage to Rosenthal

June - St John's Day Ride around 24 June in Casel, Lower Lusatia. Corpus Christi Day. Processions with Catholic bridesmaids (družka)

July/August - Customs of plucking the cock, beating the cock, tunnel-riding (Stollenreiten), stubble-riding in various villages in Lower Lusatia. Village festivals in the bilingual parishes.

October/November - Traditional autumn concerts. Cake-singing before the church-fair of the Ralbitz and Wittichenau parish.

11 November - Singing for St Martin's Day in the Catholic parishes.

December/Christmas - Gift-giving (dźěćetko) in the Schleife region. Saint Barbara on 4 December in Sollschwitz, near Wittichenau, goes from house to house. "Janšojski Bog" in Jänschwalde (Lower Lusatia) visits the children.
